Eastgate Centre
Mick Pearce · Harare, Zimbabwe · 1996
Eastgate Centre is widely cited for using passive environmental strategies to reduce dependence on conventional mechanical cooling. Mick Pearce organized offices and retail around large internal voids, thermal mass and controlled air movement, drawing inspiration from natural ventilation systems while adapting them to Harare’s climate. The heavy masonry and concrete envelope moderates temperature change and gives the building a robust urban presence. Completed in 1996, Eastgate became an influential case study in climate-responsive commercial architecture and remains one of Zimbabwe’s best-known contemporary buildings.
