Dz Bank

Frank O. Gehry · Berlin, Germany · 2001

Completed in 2001, the DZ Bank building on Berlin's Pariser Platz was designed by Frank O. Gehry as a mixed-use commercial and residential complex. Situated adjacent to the Brandenburg Gate, the exterior was heavily constrained by Berlin's strict post-reunification urban design regulations. Gehry responded with a sober, rectilinear limestone facade with deeply recessed, rhythmically spaced windows that conform to the conservative height and aesthetic guidelines of the historic square. Behind this austere exterior, the building features an intensely sculptural interior that reflects Gehry's signature deconstructivist expression. The central atrium is enclosed by an undulating glass canopy that illuminates a monumental, freestanding conference hall clad in stainless steel. This biomorphic, amoebic volume anchors the internal space, creating a dramatic contrast between exterior civic conformity and dynamic interior spatial invention.
