Durga Temple, Aihole
Early Chalukya workshops · Aihole, India
The Durga Temple at Aihole is distinguished by its apsidal plan and surrounding colonnaded passage. Its rounded end contrasts with the more familiar square geometry of many Indian temples. Carved reliefs, columns and the raised platform make the building a useful place to study the experimentation of early Chalukya religious architecture. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The apsidal temple is part of a larger enclosure of early temples.
