Dungan Mosque, Karakol
Zhou Seu + Dungan craftsmen · Karakol, Kyrgyzstan · 1910
Karakol’s Dungan Mosque was built by the city’s Dungan Muslim community using a timber construction language strongly influenced by Chinese architecture. A broad roof with upturned eaves, brightly painted columns and carved timber details create a building unlike the masonry mosques more common across Central Asia. The structure was assembled without conventional nails according to local tradition and combines Islamic use with East Asian carpentry and ornament. Completed around 1910 under master builder Zhou Seu and Dungan craftsmen, the mosque is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most distinctive examples of cultural exchange expressed directly through construction.
