Door of No Return
Yves Ahouen-Gnimon; Fortuné Bandeira + Yves Kpede + Dominique Kouas Gnonnou · Ouidah, Benin · 1995
The Door of No Return stands at the Atlantic end of Ouidah’s Route des Esclaves as a memorial to people deported through the transatlantic slave trade. The arched monument combines figurative relief, freestanding sculpture and a strongly axial relationship with the road and ocean. Its architecture is deliberately ceremonial: visitors pass through the structure toward the shore, turning movement through the memorial into part of the act of remembrance. Completed in 1995, it is one of Benin’s most visible works of memorial architecture.
