Derzhprom

Sergei Serafimov + Samuel Kravets + Mark Felger · Kharkiv, Ukraine · 1928

Derzhprom is one of the largest and most important surviving Constructivist complexes. Interlocking reinforced-concrete office blocks are linked by elevated bridges, creating a dynamic three-dimensional composition around Kharkiv’s vast Freedom Square. The project demonstrated early Soviet confidence in modern construction technology and concentrated government industrial agencies within a radically new urban ensemble. Completed in 1928, Derzhprom remains a canonical work of Ukrainian and Soviet modernism. The complex has been damaged during Russia’s full-scale invasion, including a direct strike in October 2024, but remains standing.
