de Young Museum

Herzog & de Meuron; Fong & Chan Architects · San Francisco, United States · 2005

Herzog & de Meuron's de Young Museum replaces a conventional monumental museum front with a copper-clad building embedded in Golden Gate Park. Opened in 2005, its surfaces, planted courts and twisting observation tower create different relationships with the surrounding landscape. The copper envelope was designed to change through weathering rather than remain visually fixed. Study the transition between the park, sheltered entrances and gallery interiors, where the building alternates between enclosure and carefully framed connections to vegetation and daylight. Visiting: Museum exhibitions are ticketed. The observation tower and some public areas have different access arrangements.
