Danish National Aquarium
3XN Architects · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2013
The Danish National Aquarium, also known as The Blue Planet (Den Blå Planet), is a prominent example of contemporary organic architecture. Its distinctive, sculptural form, inspired by whirlpools, features five main "arms" radiating from a central lobby, allowing for flexible expansion and a diverse exhibition flow. The building's shimmering, anodized aluminum scales contribute to its aquatic aesthetic and reflect the surrounding water. Completed in 2013, The Blue Planet is Northern Europe's largest aquarium, designed to immerse visitors in marine environments through its unique building envelope and exhibition design. Its location on the Øresund coast emphasizes the connection between architecture and the natural world, functioning as both a significant cultural institution and a landmark for the Copenhagen waterfront.
