CopenHill / Amager Bakke

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2019

CopenHill, also known as Amager Bakke, is one of BIG’s clearest statements about hedonistic sustainability. The project combines a waste-to-energy plant with a public recreational mountain, placing a ski slope, hiking trail, climbing wall, and roof landscape on top of an industrial facility. Instead of hiding infrastructure at the edge of the city, the building makes energy production visible and turns it into a destination for public life. Its faceted metal facade and sloping roofline create a striking profile in Copenhagen’s harbor district. CopenHill is especially relevant for ArchiAtlas because it expands what an architectural landmark can be: not just an object, but an active environmental and urban machine.
