Hieroglyphic Stairway, Copán

Maya builders under K’ak’ Yipyaj Chan K’awiil · Copán Ruinas, Honduras · 755

The Hieroglyphic Stairway is one of the most extraordinary architectural inscriptions of the Maya world. More than a route between levels, its monumental stair carries an extended dynastic text carved across risers, blocks and associated sculpture. The structure combines movement, historical narrative and royal representation within Copán’s ceremonial core. Although collapse and reconstruction complicate the present arrangement, the stair remains an exceptional example of architecture functioning simultaneously as monument, text and political archive.
