Comayagua Cathedral

Architect not documented in consulted sources · Comayagua, Honduras · 1711

Comayagua Cathedral combines a richly articulated frontage with a more extensive sequence of worship spaces behind it. Its principal colonial building campaigns reached the early eighteenth century, although the site continued to change afterward. Towers, niches and decorative relief give the façade a pronounced presence on the central square. Reading the church together with this public foreground helps explain its civic as well as religious role. The contrast between the decorated entrance and the interior's structural rhythm is especially useful for an architectural visit. Visiting: A working cathedral. General church access is separate from any museum or tower visit.
