Colosseum
Vespasian · Rome, Italy · 80
The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of Rome, Italy. Constructed from concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. Its construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian. This iconic structure served as a venue for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on classical mythology. The building's tiered seating and elaborate subterranean passages reflect innovative Roman engineering and design for large-scale public entertainment.
