CN Tower
John Andrews + WZMH Architects · Toronto, Canada · 1976
The CN Tower was built as a communications structure but quickly became Toronto’s dominant urban landmark. A tapering reinforced-concrete shaft supports a multi-level observation pod and antenna, producing a highly efficient vertical profile visible far beyond the city center. Slip-form construction allowed the concrete core to rise continuously, while the broad triangular base stabilizes the structure. Opened in 1976, the tower is significant both as an engineering achievement and as a piece of infrastructure whose silhouette became inseparable from Toronto’s identity.
