City of Culture of Galicia

Peter Eisenman · Santiago de Compostela, Spain · 2011

Peter Eisenman's City of Culture occupies Mount Gaiás above Santiago de Compostela. Its buildings use folded roofs, stone surfaces and intersecting geometries to turn a cultural campus into an artificial extension of the hillside. The first major facilities opened in 2011, although the original master plan was not completed in full. Walking between the built elements makes the scale of the intervention and the relationship between ground and roof especially clear. The complex is best understood as a landscape of institutions, routes and changing viewpoints rather than a single building with a conventional front façade. Visiting: The public precinct and many exhibitions are free. Event access varies. The original master plan was not fully constructed.
