Church on the Water

Tadao Ando · Shimukappu, Japan · 1988

A concrete chapel is directed toward an artificial pond, where a freestanding cross becomes part of the landscape rather than an object inside the room. Tadao Ando uses a simple sequence of walls, glass and water to collapse the boundary between ritual space and Hokkaido's changing weather.
