Church of San José de Orosi
Franciscan builders (individual architects not recorded) · Orosi, Costa Rica · 1767
The historic church at Orosi preserves a comparatively modest colonial religious building rather than a large urban cathedral. Its low roof, thick walls and timber elements establish a direct relationship with local building traditions and the valley setting. The adjacent former convent accommodates a separate museum programme. The architecture is most rewarding in the transition between the open foreground, covered edges and restrained worship interior, where the building's material character and small scale remain more important than monumental ornament. Visiting: A working historic church. The adjacent museum has different opening and admission arrangements. The record uses the completion dating in the Spanish-language architectural account; earlier foundation dates are also cited.
