Church of the Multiplication Tabgha

Anton Goergen · Tabgha, Israel · 1982

The Church of the Multiplication, completed in 1982, stands on the traditional site of the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Designed by Anton Goergen, the modern basilica incorporates elements that evoke early Christian architecture while offering contemporary interpretations. Its low-slung, unadorned exterior contrasts with the intricate interior. The building is notable for its direct engagement with the archaeological remains of earlier churches on the site. A significant feature is the preservation of a 5th-century mosaic floor, including the mosaic depicting loaves and fishes, which forms a central part of the altar area. This integration of ancient artifacts within a modern religious structure highlights the continuity of sacred space.
