Chronicle of Georgia

Zurab Tsereteli · Tbilisi, Georgia · 1985

The Chronicle of Georgia is a vast sculptural-architectural monument overlooking the Tbilisi Sea. Zurab Tsereteli arranged towering dark columns into a ceremonial ensemble whose reliefs depict Georgian rulers, Christian narratives and national history. Visitors move between the massive vertical elements rather than simply viewing the work from a single frontal position, giving the monument the spatial character of an open-air hall. Begun in the Soviet period and associated primarily with 1985, the unfinished ensemble is a striking example of late monumental public art operating at architectural and landscape scale.
