Christ Church, Windhoek

Gottlieb Redecker · Windhoek, Namibia · 1910

Windhoek’s Christ Church combines neo-Romanesque and Gothic Revival elements in a compact stone church overlooking the central government precinct. Gottlieb Redecker used local sandstone for the walls and a prominent tower capped by a steep roof, while imported stained glass and other fittings reflect the building’s German colonial context. Completed in 1910 after several years of planning and construction, the church has become one of Windhoek’s most recognizable landmarks and a key architectural record of the city’s early twentieth-century development.
