Chișinău City Hall

Alexandru Bernardazzi + Mitrofan Elladi · Chișinău, Moldova · 1902

Chișinău City Hall is a richly articulated municipal building at one of the capital’s central intersections. Alexandru Bernardazzi and Mitrofan Elladi combined an asymmetrical corner tower, arcades, balconies and decorative masonry into a highly visible civic façade shaped by late nineteenth-century eclecticism. Completed around 1902, the building has survived war damage, reconstruction and repeated changes in administration while continuing to serve municipal government. Its strong corner composition and fine-grained ornament make it one of the most important surviving works associated with Chișinău’s historic urban modernization.
