Chinguetti Mosque

Local Chinguetti stone masons · Chinguetti, Mauritania

The mosque of Chinguetti is a compact stone religious complex at the center of one of the Sahara’s historic caravan towns. Rough local masonry, a flat roof and a square minaret with simple projecting details give the building an austere form closely tied to the material and climatic conditions of the desert. The mosque has been rebuilt and repaired over a long period, making a single completion date misleading. Its architectural importance lies in the continuity of Saharan building traditions and in its role within Chinguetti’s dense earthen-and-stone urban fabric.
