Chichu Art Museum

Tadao Ando · Naoshima, Japan · 2004

Chichu Art Museum is largely buried within a hill to preserve Naoshima's landscape, but its geometric courts and skylights remain open to the sky. Tadao Ando uses daylight as an active material, tailoring rooms around works by Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria. The alternating sequence of underground compression and bright open courts makes the building one of the most complete fusions of architecture, art and landscape in contemporary Japan.
