Charminar

Mir Momin Astarabadi and Qutb Shahi workshops · Hyderabad, India · 1591

Charminar marks a major crossing in the historic centre of Hyderabad. Four tall minarets rise from the corners of a compact structure pierced by large arches. The building combines an elevated religious function with a powerful urban role, framing movement through the surrounding streets and markets rather than standing apart from them. Visiting: Climbing the monument is ticketed; the four arches can be seen freely from the surrounding market streets.
