Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown

Charles Correa · Lisbon, Portugal · 2010

Charles Correa's Champalimaud Centre brings a clinical and research programme to Lisbon's western waterfront. Opened in 2010, the complex uses curved volumes, long views and carefully organized outdoor space to connect an advanced scientific institution with the broad horizon of the Tagus. The architecture distinguishes patient and laboratory requirements while giving shared spaces a clear relationship to light and landscape. Its symbolic role is reinforced by the waterfront approach and central open space. The building remains an active healthcare and research facility, so its public architectural setting should be distinguished from its restricted professional interiors. Visiting: A working clinical and research centre. Public outdoor areas do not grant access to laboratories or patient facilities.
