Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Centre

Efraín Recinos · Guatemala City, Guatemala · 1978

Efraín Recinos conceived Guatemala’s national cultural center as a sculptural complex rather than a conventional theater block. Rising from the site of a former fortress, the building’s angular volumes, textured concrete surfaces and vivid integrated artworks create a distinctly local form of late modernism. The main theater, smaller performance spaces and exterior terraces are composed as a continuous cultural landscape. The project is particularly important for its attempt to develop a modern Guatemalan architectural identity through abstraction rather than historical imitation.
