Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre

Cristián Fernández Arquitectos + Lateral Arquitectura & Diseño · Santiago, Chile · 2010

GAM reworks the former 1972 UNCTAD III complex into a porous contemporary cultural center. Following fire damage and decades of altered use, the intervention reopened the building toward Alameda with transparent façades, generous covered public spaces and a sequence of plazas between major program volumes. The project deliberately exposes traces of the earlier structure while adding a perforated metal skin and new circulation. It is a significant case of adaptive reuse tied to Chile’s political and cultural history.
