Central Market of Valencia

Alexandre Soler i March; Francesc Guàrdia i Vial · Valencia, Spain · 1928

Valencia's Central Market brings early twentieth-century civic ambition to the everyday activity of buying food. Alexandre Soler i March and Francesc Guàrdia i Vial designed a large metal-framed hall, completed in 1928, with glass, ceramics and decorative references to the region's produce. Daylight and a legible structural rhythm help organize the dense pattern of stalls. The central dome gives the interior a strong point of orientation without removing its character as a working market. Look at the relationship between the hall, its urban entrances and the nearby Silk Exchange across the square. Visiting: Free access during trading hours. Food purchases are separate.
