Cathedral of Lima

Francisco Becerra; Juan Martínez de Arrona · Lima, Peru · 1622

Lima Cathedral occupies one side of the capital's principal civic square. Its surviving form reflects several construction and reconstruction campaigns, including work associated with Francisco Becerra and Juan Martínez de Arrona. The ordered frontage establishes a relationship with the surrounding governmental and religious buildings, while the interior combines a repeated structural rhythm with chapels and later interventions. Earthquakes are an important part of its architectural history, making the cathedral a layered institution rather than the product of a single uninterrupted building period. Visiting: Cultural and museum visits are ticketed. Worship access follows separate arrangements. Earthquakes led to later reconstruction campaigns.
