Cathedral of Christ the Light
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill / Craig Hartman · Oakland, United States · 2008
Oakland's Cathedral of Christ the Light places a timber structure within a luminous glazed enclosure. Completed in 2008 by SOM, the building makes the relationship between structural ribs, filtered daylight and the central worship space its defining architectural subject. The wider cathedral precinct accommodates administrative, social and other religious functions around this main volume. From the lakeside setting, the outer form reads as a clear landmark, while the interior reveals a more intricate pattern of timber members and controlled light. Visiting: A working cathedral. General worship-space access is normally free during published hours.
