Cathedral of the Holy Cross
Hope, Reeler & Morris · Lusaka, Zambia · 1962
Lusaka’s Cathedral of the Holy Cross is a major example of mid-century Anglican architecture in southern Africa. The building combines a tall pitched roof, strong structural rhythm and large areas of glazing with a relatively restrained material palette, creating a broad luminous nave rather than relying on heavy historical ornament. Its scale reflects Lusaka’s growth as a national capital during the period around independence. Completed in 1962, the cathedral remains an important civic and religious landmark within the city’s institutional center.
