Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul
Frater Frans Harmes · Paramaribo, Suriname · 1885
Paramaribo’s cathedral is an extraordinary large-scale timber interpretation of the Roman Catholic basilica. Built in the late nineteenth century, the church combines a neo-Gothic exterior composition with an extensive wooden interior structure and richly crafted surfaces. Its twin towers establish a strong presence within the historic center, while the material system reflects Suriname’s long timber-building tradition. The cathedral is a key architectural monument within Paramaribo’s UNESCO-listed colonial urban fabric.
