Casa Gilardi

Luis Barragán · Mexico City, Mexico · 1976

Casa Gilardi was Barragán’s final completed house and condenses many of his most recognizable spatial devices into a compact urban residence. A sequence of enclosed rooms culminates in a dramatically colored dining and swimming space where a freestanding red wall intersects water and filtered light. Courtyards, colored planes and carefully delayed views turn movement through the house into a choreographed experience. Completed in 1976, it is a mature demonstration of architecture driven by atmosphere rather than formal complexity.
