Casa Amatller
Josep Puig i Cadafalch · Barcelona, Spain · 1900
Josep Puig i Cadafalch transformed an existing Barcelona house into Casa Amatller around 1900. Its stepped gable, richly carved stonework and patterned surface create a distinctive frontage within the celebrated Block of Discord. The commission joined a family residence to an image of cultural identity and commercial success for chocolatier Antoni Amatller. Inside, decorative arts, furniture and circulation retain much of the character of the historic home. Comparing its façade with the adjacent Casa Batlló offers a particularly useful way to see the range of approaches within Catalan Modernisme. Visiting: The historic house interior is accessible by ticketed visit.
