Carrara Cathedral

Unknown Pisan-Luccan workshop · Carrara, Italy · 1395

Carrara Cathedral is a compact Romanesque and Gothic church whose marble fabric directly reflects the quarries surrounding the city. The lower façade uses alternating dark and pale bands and a sculpted portal, while the upper section rises to a large Gothic rose window and open loggia. A tall bell tower and narrow piazza intensify the building's vertical presence. Inside, the basilican space contains later chapels and furnishings but preserves the strong material identity of local stone. Construction extended across the medieval period, so the date is an approximate endpoint rather than a single documented completion moment.
