Carlton Centre

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill · Johannesburg, South Africa · 1973

SOM designed a slender office tower above a larger commercial base in central Johannesburg. The regular facade grid and considerable height give the building a strong presence in the skyline, representing the scale of corporate development in the city during the early 1970s. Visiting: The mall at the base is public. The 50th-floor 'Top of Africa' viewing deck has been open to visitors in the past, but its current status is unclear; ask at the mall before going up.
