Caracol
Maya builders (individual architects not recorded) · Cayo District, Belize
Caracol was a major Maya city whose surviving centre forms only part of a much larger settlement landscape. Its large plazas, raised platforms and palace-temple complexes demonstrate the scale of urban organization achieved in the Maya lowlands. The Caana complex combines substantial height with a layered arrangement of ceremonial and residential spaces. The site's architecture is best understood through successive approaches and changes in level, while its remote forest setting helps explain the relationship between the excavated core and the wider archaeological territory. Visiting: A remote archaeological reserve. Confirm current road conditions and visiting arrangements before departure. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
