Canadian War Museum
Moriyama & Teshima Architects; Griffiths Rankin Cook Architects · Ottawa, Canada · 2005
The Canadian War Museum organizes remembrance and exhibition within a low, angular building beside the Ottawa River. Opened in 2005, the design by Moriyama & Teshima with Griffiths Rankin Cook uses concrete, controlled light and a planted roof to connect a large institution with its landscape. Its architectural sequence distinguishes the public approach, historical galleries and more concentrated memorial spaces. The building is particularly useful for studying how an extensive museum programme can use section and terrain to moderate its apparent scale. Visiting: Regular museum admission is ticketed. Certain dates and periods offer free admission.
