CaixaForum Barcelona

Josep Puig i Cadafalch · Barcelona, Spain · 1911

CaixaForum Barcelona occupies the former Casaramona textile factory, a Modernisme complex designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and completed in 1911. Its brick halls, towers and decorative details give industrial production an unusually deliberate civic image. The conversion into a cultural centre opened in 2002, with an entrance courtyard designed by Arata Isozaki that brings visitors down below street level. This sequence creates a distinct contemporary threshold before the historic factory spaces. Look at how the repeating industrial volumes accommodate galleries without losing the identity of the original complex. Visiting: Exhibition admission is ticketed, with exemptions. The main date refers to the Casaramona factory.
