Burana Tower
Karakhanid builders · Tokmok area, Kyrgyzstan
Burana Tower is the surviving minaret of Balasagun, an important Karakhanid city on the Silk Roads. The cylindrical brick tower originally rose higher than its present form but was reduced by earthquakes and later restored. Decorative brick bands articulate the shaft, while an internal stair leads to elevated views across the Chuy Valley and the archaeological landscape. Dating to the eleventh century, the minaret is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most important medieval architectural remains. Because the precise construction year is not securely established, this record deliberately leaves the completion year blank rather than inventing false precision.
