Buland Darwaza

Mughal imperial workshops · Fatehpur Sikri, India · 1602

Buland Darwaza turns the entrance to Fatehpur Sikri's congregational mosque into a monumental ascent. Its broad stairs, high central opening and domed elements create a ceremonial threshold visible from a considerable distance. Red sandstone and pale stone detailing reinforce the scale and precision of the Mughal gateway. Visiting: The gateway exterior and mosque approach are distinct from the paid palace section of Fatehpur Sikri. No fee is assigned to exterior viewing; verify local access rules for the religious precinct.
