Brisbane City Hall

Thomas Ramsay Hall + George Gray Prentice · Brisbane, Australia · 1930

Brisbane City Hall is a large interwar civic complex organized around a central auditorium and a prominent clock tower facing King George Square. Thomas Ramsay Hall and George Gray Prentice used a formal classical language of columns, stone façades and ceremonial interiors to give municipal government a monumental presence. The tower became one of Brisbane’s dominant vertical landmarks before the city’s later high-rise growth. Opened in 1930, the building remains an important example of Australian civic architecture combining urban symbolism with a major public performance hall.
