Brasília Cathedral
Oscar Niemeyer · Brasília, Brazil · 1970
The exterior of Brasília Cathedral is defined by 16 concrete columns, each weighing 90 tons, that curve inward to form a hyperbolic paraboloid structure. These columns suggest hands reaching towards the sky, surrounding a circular transparent volume of stained glass. A reflecting pool surrounds the cathedral, enhancing its light and ethereal quality. Its distinctive form embodies the modernist vision of Brasília, of which it is a central iconic structure. Architect Oscar Niemeyer designed the cathedral as part of the new capital’s monumental axis. The interior features three suspended angel sculptures and a dramatic downward view into the nave, furthering its unique spatial experience.
