Bosco Verticale
Boeri Studio · Milan, Italy · 2014
Bosco Verticale, designed by Stefano Boeri and completed in 2014, is one of Milan’s most internationally recognized contemporary residential projects. The pair of towers integrates hundreds of trees and thousands of shrubs directly into the facade system, transforming vegetation into a primary architectural material rather than decorative landscaping. Located in the Porta Nuova district, the project was conceived as a model for urban densification combined with environmental performance and biodiversity. The balconies extend outward to support large planted terraces that change visually with the seasons and create a constantly evolving facade. Beyond its iconic appearance, the vegetation contributes to shading, air filtration, and microclimatic regulation while also reducing the visual hardness of high-rise development. The project became a major reference point in discussions about sustainable urbanism and ecological architecture. Bosco Verticale demonstrates how residential towers can contribute to environmental thinking while reshaping the image of contemporary urban living in Milan.
