Bom Jesus do Monte

Carlos Amarante · Braga, Portugal · 1811

Bom Jesus do Monte develops a pilgrimage route as an extended architectural landscape above Braga. Its monumental stairways combine landings, fountains, chapels and framed views, turning an uphill walk into a carefully staged sequence. At the summit, Carlos Amarante's neoclassical church, completed in 1811, gives the route a clear destination. The Baroque steps and later church belong to different campaigns but work together through their alignment with the hillside. Looking back toward Braga is as important as looking uphill: the sanctuary repeatedly connects symbolic movement with the physical experience of terrain and distance. Visiting: The monumental stairs and sanctuary precinct are generally free. Funicular travel and optional facilities are charged separately.
