Bodegas Ysios
Santiago Calatrava · Laguardia, Spain · 2001
Bodegas Ysios gives a winery a strongly articulated profile at the edge of Laguardia. Santiago Calatrava organized the production building as a long, clear volume beneath an undulating roof, completed in 2001. The roofline echoes the movement of the distant Sierra de Cantabria while the warm wall surfaces establish a relationship with the vineyard foreground. The building's public image is concentrated on this long elevation and its central entrance. A winery visit offers a different understanding of the programme behind that image, including the practical relationship between production spaces, controlled light and the landscape. Visiting: Winery experiences require advance booking and payment. Production spaces are restricted.
