The Black Diamond
Schmidt Hammer Lassen · Copenhagen, Denmark · 1999
The Black Diamond extends Denmark’s Royal Library onto Copenhagen’s waterfront with a sharply faceted black volume whose polished envelope reflects the harbor and sky. Completed in 1999 by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the addition is cut by a dramatic glazed atrium that links city and water while revealing the building’s public circulation. Bridges connect the new structure to the historic library behind it. The project helped redefine Copenhagen’s harbor as a civic cultural landscape and remains a major example of late twentieth-century Danish public architecture.
