Vasconcelos Library
Alberto Kalach / TAX · Mexico City, Mexico · 2006
Alberto Kalach’s Vasconcelos Library transforms book storage into a vast suspended interior landscape. Multi-level steel stacks hang within a long glazed hall, connected by bridges and stairs that create shifting views through the collection. The building is embedded within an extensive botanical garden, allowing vegetation and daylight to temper the scale of the interior. Opened in 2006, the project treats the library as metropolitan infrastructure and public space rather than a conventional sequence of enclosed reading rooms.
