Benesse House Museum

Tadao Ando · Naoshima, Japan · 1992

Benesse House Museum was the foundational architectural work in Naoshima's transformation into a major art destination. Tadao Ando embeds galleries and hotel functions into the coastal slope, using concrete courts, ramps and framed views to keep the Seto Inland Sea continuously present. Art is distributed between interior and landscape, making the architecture inseparable from the larger island experience.
