Benedictine Monastery Chapel

Martín Correa + Gabriel Guarda · Santiago, Chile · 1964

The Benedictine chapel in Las Condes is composed from two intersecting white cubic volumes whose carefully placed openings transform sunlight into the principal architectural material. The interior avoids conventional decoration; changes in wall plane, floor level and filtered illumination define the sanctuary and focus attention on the liturgical elements. Its radical geometric clarity and atmospheric use of natural light make the chapel one of the most influential works of Chilean modern religious architecture.
