Bellavista Housing Estate

Arne Jacobsen · Klampenborg, Denmark · 1934

Bellavista is one of Arne Jacobsen’s defining early housing projects and a landmark of Danish functionalism. The white-rendered apartment blocks step and rotate to maximize sunlight and views toward the Øresund, creating a composition that is simultaneously rational and picturesque. Completed in 1934, the complex demonstrates Jacobsen’s ability to translate the principles of European modernism into a distinctly Scandinavian residential environment. Together with nearby Bellevue projects, it forms an unusually coherent modernist ensemble in Klampenborg and is an important precedent for low-rise, high-quality collective housing.
